Exodus Temple
Themed Experience Seminar - Fall 2021 - Professor Peter Weishar
The Exodus Temple is a synagogue that was designed with the intention of not using any symbols or architectural styles that are associated with existing synagogues.. The entrance experience retells the story of the Exodus, as a way of constantly remembering how God brought Israel out of Egypt.
The first space is fully dark, as per the final plague of darkness which convinced Pharaoh to let the Israelites free.
The space then ramps up and is shielded on the side by fabric panels, representing the parting of the red sea.
Finally the temple itself is in a large wooden structure in the shape of a tent, with the ark one piece that extends down. This tent shape calls to mind the tabernacle as the tribes were traveling in the wilderness.
