New York Underground
Small Project Studio - Spring 2022 - Professor Aram Ebben
The concept of the New York Underground was inspired primarily by a desire to create a space that felt truly lived in. Combining aspects of the cyberpunk genre with examples of spontaneous communities and adaptive reuse, I imagine a neighborhood constructed within an abandoned New York subway station. The story is that at some unspecified point in the future, as housing becomes increasingly more crowded and more expensive, a diverse group of artists from all corners of the city decide to colonize the subway with their own private neighborhood. Carving dwellings out of stairwells and bodega stands, they build new structures from the interesting salvage they find. The center of the platform becomes a sort of town square, and is filled with arcade games made to entertain and bring the community together.
The arcade machines are constructed out of salvaged pieces of New York's history, using phone booths, MTA machines, newsstands, streetlights, and all manner of decorations taken from architectural facades. The space is also filled with art installations that celebrate the design and the spirit of New York City.
Within the arcade, there are designated studio spaces, which can be rented out by local artists for their own use. These studios can be separated off for privacy or opened to allow artists to be inspired by the environment around them and in turn to inspire the guests that visit.
